Guess who’s coming to dinner was one of the most controversial film at its release time because of its subject which deals with interracial marriage.Even few months before the films release, interracial marriage was illegal in several states of USA.Comming to the plot of the movie, is all about the love affair between an upper class white American girl Joey (Katharine Houghton) with African American physician Dr. John Prentice (Sidney Poitier) which happens when they met each other in Hawaii.Soon Joey while returning to her home , brings her fiance along, to meet her parents.

Joey’s mother played by Katharine Hepburn was initially shocked by the news when Joey informs her about her affair.More than the affair, joey’s mother was nervous about what would be her husband Mr. Drayton’s (Spencer Tracy) reaction to it.After a few while Mr. Drayton arrives home and in rush for another appointment.Joey introduces John to her father and informs him that they would like to marry. Mr. Drayton cancels his appointment and spends time in discussion with John. John clearly says that only with parents approval he would like to get married. Mr. Drayton gradually impressed with johns approach .John then informs his parents and suddenly Joey interrupts the call and invites Johns parents for the Dinner. The title of the movie captured from the dialogue when Joey informs Mr. Drayton “Guess who’s coming to dinner”.

Johns parents were in bit shock when they meet Joey in the airport. Both parents discuss with each other about the consequences of the entire process and understands each others feelings.Mean time one of a close friend of Mr. Drayton takes part in the dinner as a family friend. Finally Mr. Drayton gives a detailed speech regarding his views and approves the marriage.Film also exposes Black-on-black racism as the family’s house maid was initially rude with Mr. Drayton.
